South Wales Scorpions stand-off Steve Parry is delighted to see more Welsh youngsters playing Rugby League in the principality and has urged more to try the game.

The stand-off comes from a Rugby Union background himself, having come through the ranks at Nelson RUFC before changing codes as a teenager.

“I’d say check it out,” Parry told Code13 when asked what advice he would give to any Welsh youngster considering League.

“It’s faster and quicker and you don’t have all the waiting around at scrums and line-outs, as well as the  ‘kick tennis’ you get in Union these days.

“I played Union from when I was seven to when I was 15. Ninety-five per cent of [League] players in South Wales play both – Union in the winter and League in the summer.

“Things are looking good in Wales [for League], obviously with the Crusaders in Super League, us and now the Cougars entering the competition below us.”

Parry, who scored 19 tries for the Scorpions last season as they clinced promotion from Championship 1, is anticipating a tougher test this time around for the club.

“We won’t be a surprise this year,” he added.

“Hopefully we can keep going and be successful in the Championship.”

The 22-year-old is also looking forward to renewing some ‘local’ rivalries in the Championship this season.

“London Skolars,” he replied, when asked which club he was relishing facing.

“It’s a local derby – though I use the word ‘local’ in the widest sense!”
