Garreth Carvell ponders Welsh switch

Warrington Wolves prop Garreth Carvell has revealed that he may play for Wales in this year’s Four Nations at the end of the season.

The front-rower turned out for England Down Under in last year’s tournament, but now feels that playing for Wales may represent his best chance of international success.

He has previously played for Wales, but made himself available for England in the wake of the RFL’s decision to scrap Great Britain in 2006.

“That decision didn’t make things easy for a lot of us,” Carvell told League Express.

“But one of my biggest remaining ambitions is to play against Australia, and having not made the England Elite Training Squad that was announced earlier this season, I’ll certainly consider playing again for Wales.

“As for playing for England instead of Wales, it was really difficult – you want to be loyal, but the RFL moved the goalposts, and a lot of us who had played for Wales, Ireland or Scotland were left in a tricky position.

“They should bring Great Britain back, because the pool of players is larger and you’re representing your whole country.”

Meanwhile, Carvell also has his eye on playing in the NRL before his career is over.

“I almost went to the NRL before signing for Warrington, but I was offered too short a contract,” he explained.

“I’d love to do it though, but if I’m going to do it, I’d have to do it soon, although there are no offers on the table.

“To challenge myself in the NRL would be fantastic, like Sam Burgess and Gareth Ellis have done, and they’ve both played superbly over there.

“I’m contracted to Warrington until the end of the season and I’m focused on for the time being is winning the Challenge Cup and the Super League with the Wolves.”
